May 9 - “Pneumatology 101” Matthew 3:1-12
The doctrine of the Holy Spirit may be the most neglected doctrine in the church today. Bill Bright has said that in the course of his ministry he has surveyed thousands of Christians in churches around the world, and determined that nearly 95% of the respondents have indicated that they have little knowledge of who the Holy Spirit is, or why He exists. There are at least two reasons why we must learn the basics of the Holy Spirit. First of all, as Thomas Arnold said, "He who does not know God, the Holy Spirit, does not know God at all. Put simply, you cannot know God except through the Holy Spirit. But secondly, you can never understand what the Holy Spirit does until you understand who the Holy Spirit is.
May 16 - “Empowered!” Romans 5:1-11
To be a Christian is to change. It is to become new. It is not simply a matter of choosing a new lifestyle, though there is a new style. It has to do with being a new person. New persons do not emerge full-blown. Conversion, passing from death to life, may be the miracle of the moment, but the making of a saint is the process of a lifetime. The process of saint-making is to work out in fact what is already true in principle. It is the power of the Holy Spirit working within those who accept Jesus Christ in faith that brings about this transformation. The Holy Spirit is the power of Jesus Christ within us to transform our rather ordinary lives into lives of extraordinary significance.
May 23 - “Doing Pentecost” Acts 2:1-21
On Pentecost morning, the miracle of the Holy Spirit was not that the disciples could suddenly speak languages they had never known before. The miracle of Pentecost was and is this: Pentecost power proclaims a fundamental transformation. The presence of Christ's Spirit burst out of accepted, established parameters. Holiness became accessible to all, even the fearful disciples, and was preached forth to all who would listen. Human attempts to keep the Holy Spirit contained in one holy language or one holy place failed. Christ's sacrifice split open the chrysalis and sent the Holy Spirit soaring out into the world.
May 30 - “Speaking in Tongues” Acts 2:1-13
It is tragic, and true that the subject of tongues-speaking has become one of the most divisive topics in the church today. But as Christians, we've got to listen to reason, to logic, and certainly to what the Scriptures say, and find biblical truth for our position. We usually get so carried away with our own dogmatic stance that we won't have an open mind to hear any other side than our own. We will examine exactly what the Bible teaches about speaking in tongues and what that means for our lives as Christians today.
June 6 - “Meeting of Spirits” John 14:16-18; 1 Thessalonians 5:17
The Holy Spirit empowers prayer, and yet prayer seems to be one of the most neglected of spiritual disciplines. Most people don’t even know what prayer is, or how to do it. Prayer was described by someone once as a ‘meeting of spirit with spirit’. It is through prayer that we experience God in one of the most pure and consummate forms imaginable. But this goes beyond a fuzzy feeling of mystical ecstasy—there are real, enduring ways in which God, through the Holy Spirit, meets a person during prayer, and works through them to touch a world in need. Without prayer, your Christian growth will inevitably be stymied, causing you to only breathe in your own stale air, and only hear your own voice echoed back to you. God wants more for us, and has designed prayer to help us grow closer to Him. |
