A Lenten sermon series based upon the Book of Galatians
Ash Wednesday, February 17: “Googling God” - Galatians 1:11-24
Knowing about a person is not at all the same as knowing a person. Personal knowledge requires that the person reveal him or herself to us, It requires a personal relationship, and that type of knowledge of God requires divine revelation. This is what Paul means when he says that his encounter with the risen Christ was “not of human origin.” It was a personal revelation of what God has done to save us in Christ, a revelation that also comes to people today.
February 21: “Pesticide Free” - Galatians 2:20 We seek a natural “pesticide free” relationship with Christ. What are the impurities or pesticides in your life that keep you from having a living, growing relationship with Jesus?
As we have died to our old life; complete with pesticides and additives, Jesus becomes a living, breathing, vital, life giver….alive in us! He is our power for living and our hope for the future.
February 28: “Putting on Heirs” - Galatians 3:23-29
Because we live in a dark, broken world, we all of us experience brokenness, there is simply no way around it! If you live in water, you are going to get wet, if you live in brokenness, you are going to get hurt! But the children of God will be delivered from the brokenness of the world, we will be delivered from everything that hurts, everything that makes us afraid, everything that damages us!
March 7: “I Can Do It Myself!” - Galatians 4:21-5:1
In spite of how things may appear, God still has a plan, and it still involves you. You may have given up some blessings through your rebellion, but that’s the great thing about God. He still has much in store for us. Take your lumps, see it as a learning experience and an opportunity to grow spiritually. Re-commit yourself to yielding to the Holy Spirit, take up your cross and follow Jesus.
March 14: “Free to Be Faithful” - Galatians 5:1-18
God calls Christians to freedom. That freedom is found not in self-indulgence, nor in an endless, desperate search for satisfaction. True freedom is found in sacrificial love, by which we freely choose to serve one another, becoming slaves to one another for Christ’s sake.
March 21: “Bearing Organic Fruit, Reaping an Organic Harvest” - Galatians 5:19-6:10
Paul describes the Christian life as a wondrous garden tended by a wondrous gardener – the Holy Spirit. Yet the produce of this garden is constantly threatened by the desires of another gardener – our own sinful natures. Whose seed we allow to take root, and to thrive in our gardens, naturally determines what kind of harvest we will reap, both in this life, and in the life to come. A living faith, an organic faith, is like a garden that continually produces fruit for the benefit of all humanity.
