A Three Week Sermon Series on Generosity
October 11: “Creating Margin” - Titus 3:1-8
The Bible is clear that we should devote our time and energy to “doing what is good” – but many of us have filled our lives to the point that it is literally impossible to be generous with our time. The salvation Christ offers us is meant to free us from the things that keep us enslaved, including our calendars and schedules. We need to regain the “margin of life” we have lost, so that we can truly devote ourselves to doing what is good, so that we can be truly generous with our time rather than offering it begrudgingly or not at all.
October 18: “Pay It Forward” - 2 Corinthians 8:7-15
Giving, at its heart, is more a spiritual matter than a financial matter. It is never a quid pro quo. It is neither a payment for blessings received nor a bribe for blessings hoped for. But it does have to do with gratitude for grace, for salvation, for confidence that God’s way is best. What God has done for us cannot be paid back, and isn’t expected to be, but it can and should be “paid forward”. Our regular offerings to the church are one way to do that. They are good for the church, of course, but in our giving them, they are also good for our souls.
October 25: “Overflowing Praise” - Matthew 14:13-21
When we join the crowd at the seashore, we come to understand that God’s way with us is not one of bargaining but of incredible abundance and extravagant generosity. When we experience the incredible good that Christ can do with even the little that we offer, the only thing that is needed is to figure out how we can share God’s blessings with others.
