An Advent/Christmas Sermon Series based upon the Biblical Songs celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ
November 29: “Isaiah’s Song” - Isaiah 9:1-7
We worship the Jewish Messiah, prophesied about in the Old Testament who came to the world 2000 years ago, and will return to the world to establish his righteous kingdom on earth. In the Old Testament, He was anticipated; In the New Testament, He is realized. He is the One for whom the world was waiting. The world was waiting in response to a promise. As we begin our preparation for Christmas, we need to remember that we celebrate Christmas because Jesus is the fulfillment of God’s greatest Promise.
December 6: “Jeremiah’s Song” - Jeremiah 33:14-16
Our world is full of promises, promises of things that will give meaning and purpose and value to your life. Promises that you don’t have to feel what you’re feeling. Promises that everything is going to be all right. Promises that tomorrow is going to be a better day. Promises that you’re better than that, that you’re pretty and strong and smart and loved and liked. Some promises are as empty and hollow as a bubble; and some promises are as good as gold. We, all of us live our lives by these promises. And in very large part our satisfaction and joy in life depends upon how well we pick these promises.
December 13: “Zechariah's Song” -
Luke 1:67-79
We prefer a god who does the expected and is predictable. We would like a god we have some control over, or at least one we can figure out. But this God breaks out of all our boxes. He is all about making good His promises and fulfilling the covenant that He made with us, and He will use whatever means are at his disposal, which means He just might do anything at any given time. “This is what the Lord Almighty says: ‘In a little while I will once more shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land. I will shake all nations, and the desired of all nations will come’” (Haggai 2:6-7). Hardly anyone expected the coming of Messiah when He came. A covenant fulfilling Christmas was not running through their minds. But the Lord announced His plan to a virgin named Mary. The Lord assured a peasant named Joseph. The skies opened and the angels came, and Jesus broke the night air with a baby’s cry. It seemed like such a small thing, but it was God’s thing, and it changed the world.
December 20: “Mary's Song” - Luke 1:46-55
Because of what God has done, we worship Him for His forgiveness, His victory over the world and His covenant with us. The Bible says, “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20). Our response should be patterned after Mary’s: “Lord, here is my life. I will do whatever you want me to do. I will go wherever you want me to go. Make me your servant.”
