August 3: “The Spirit of Prophecy” - Revelation 19:1-10 The secular and commonly held belief is that prophets are people who are able to “see” the future and make it known to us in the present. This notion may be partly true, but it fails to define the most important aspect of the prophet. The Bible is very clear; a prophet is not one who can see the future, not a crystal ball gazer, but one who, by the power of the Holy Spirit, speaks for God, shares God’s word with God’s people, that they might obey and remain faithful.

August 10: “The Prophet of Longing” - Isaiah 64:1-9

Have you ever tried to pray, but felt like your prayers went no further than the four walls surrounding you? Have you ever watched someone you love in terrible pain and misery and prayed to God for healing, but found only silence in reply to your prayer?Have you ever been deserted by a loved one and left completely alone in a very dark and frightening world. Have you ever watched the horrifying events of our world and wondered why in the world God allowed such things to happen? Have you ever longed for God to rend open the heavens and come down and make things right? Isaiah did; and this forever contemporary spokesman for God has so much to teach us today about the silence of God.

August 17: “Reluctant Love” - Jonah 1:1-2:10

When God commanded him to go to Nineveh in order to tell them how much God loved them, the expression on Jonah’s face was similar to that of a man who has just gotten a whiff of trouble in his septic tank. Quite frankly, Jonah did not WANT to offer the love of God to the Ninevites. In the first place, they were Arabs; and were responsible for all the terrible things that had happened to his people. In the second place, far from wanting to see them saved, nothing would have given Jonah more pleasure than the thought of them getting what he thought they had coming to them. But God had other plans, and the prophet Jonah’s message is a bright light to direct our walk in faith today.

August 24: “Uncomfortable Salvation” - Ezekiel 13:1-11

Soft words of praise, comfortable words that teach self-gratification of the flesh, and sermons that don’t step on your toes and make you squirm in your pew from time to time are not sermons from God. God doesn’t care if you are uncomfortable with His Word. God doesn’t bring praise where no praise is due. Most of all, God’s Word to you is always designed to bring about a change in your life and to help you live a more sanctified life. If you don’t squirm from time to time, then its time to find a new preacher that will tell you the truth or you may just leave this life of comfort to end up where you don’t want to be for all eternity.
